The Tale of Despereaux, the 2004 Newbery Medal winner by Kate DiCamillo, is a terrific book and continues to be very popular. The novel's subtitle, Being the story of a mouse, a princess, some soup, and a spool of thread, gives the reader a clue that this is an unusual tale. I highly recommend it and hope your children will take the time to read it before they see the movie.. This children's novel, an odd and engrossing fairy tale for 8-12 year olds, is also an excellent read-aloud for children 6-12.

This is such a good book. Some teachers read it in the 4th grade as a class novel. It is good to see that parents keep their children reading over the summer. :)
